Dear Netflix, DON’T Release House Of Cards Today

Observations February 13, 2014 4:02 pm

If you live in the south, you probably have a snow day today. (If you live in the north, you’re dredging through the snow but you’re still at work.) And for those stuck at home who still have power, you’re probably bored. And watching TV, or bingeing on Netflix. Which is why there’s an official White HouseĀ petition and numerous articles begging Netflix to release the second season of House of Cards today, not tonight at 12:01am.

But releasing the second season early wouldn’t be a smart move. Right now, Netflix is sitting on a gold mine, dangling a proverbial carrot in front of every bored-at-home-snowed-in-House-of-Cards-lover in the US. Unlike last year when there was a major marketing push for House of Cards, Netflix has been relatively quiet about the second season. This snowstorm couldn’t have come at a better time, and Netflix couldn’t have orchestrated a better marketing coup. Because of this snow storm, Netflix didn’t have to spend a dime (unless Frank Underwood has control of the weather…) to create a social media frenzy around House of Cards– and do you know how much that generally costs to create?

So Netflix, make us wait. You’re not ‘missing an opportunity’ by not releasing the season early. In fact, it’s the opposite- you’d miss the opportunity for all of these free impressions if you did release the season now. Drive that frenzy until we reach near pandemonium, and then drop the season at exactly 12:01am like planned.

But oh- please do something about slugline.com.
